One important use for it is to thicken models for printing at 28mm scale (Select > Modify > Select All > Extrude > Normals, etc.). It's much more complex and the user interface makes my head hurt a lot, but I simply google the task I'm trying to accomplish and follow the instructions and it works pretty well. Occasionally I'll edit something in MeshMixer, which is also free, but is a Windows download (maybe other platforms, too, I don't know). I use it to merge animal models onto 28mm bases for D&D, and adding supports to models so that I don't have to use the draconian support feature in Cura (which are difficult to remove for delicate prints). It's not much good (as far as I can tell) for non-primitive shapes, but you can do quite a lot by mixing solid shapes with holes, and by combining shapes together. It's free and online, and very easy to learn. I've been starting with remixing, and my go-to now is Tinkercad. It is entirely based on preference, so I'd give the free ones a testing. It's really powerful and an incredible tool to know for 3d printing as a whole.įor reference, I know /u/mz4250 uses Blender, /u/Mia_Kay uses Sculptris, and Duncan Shadow uses zBrush. I remixed this mini from MiaKay entirely in meshmixer. Meshmixer is great for all the complex stuff. Boolean values, easy to use, good for just adding one thing to another or fixing a hole.
For that I mainly use Meshmixer and Tinkercad. Haven't tried Maya, but I have some friends in graphic design that enjoy it.įor remixing, however, there are a few other options. zBrush mainly adds complex features like layers and more textures. Easy to pick up and get started right away.
Sculptris is like a free version of zBrush, but it does really good for sclupting. I've tried blender, but just navigating around is pretty difficult for me. The top ones for making minis are Blender (free), Sculptris (free), Maya (Not Free), and zBrush (butttons of money).
